Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ

General questions

A rooftop tent is installed on the roof of a vehicle or an outdoor trailer, transforming almost any vehicle into a mobile camp that is always ready for adventure. Its quick opening allows you to fully enjoy every moment. It is the unique experience of sleeping up high , comfortably , with exceptional panoramas. An ideal solution for exploring more often , more easily.

More concretely, here are its advantages:

✔ Quick installation and uninstallation: ready in seconds to minutes depending on the model.

✔ Sleep high up: away from animals, insects and ground moisture. Away from rocks and tree roots.

✔ Better ventilation: thanks to the altitude and large windows.

✔ Guaranteed cleanliness: it does not touch the ground, unlike traditional tents.

✔ Use on all types of terrain: snow, rocks, mud, tall grass, etc.

✔ Adaptability to sloping terrain: by adjusting the height of the vehicle wheels with leveling blocks.

✔ Year-round availability: Leave it on your roof so you're always ready to go.

✔ A comfortable bed that is always ready: memory foam mattress with the possibility of leaving blankets and pillows even when the tent is closed.

✔ Excellent value for money: an incomparable experience for a fraction of the cost of a trailer, RV or campervan

An outdoor trailer is a multi-functional concept that adapts to many uses: camping, rooftop tents, transporting bicycles, kayaks, skis, canoes, hunting and fishing equipment, and much more.

Here are its main advantages:

Extra carrying space: the equivalent of a pickup box to carry everything you need, without compromise.

Better organization: Keep your equipment tidy and ready to use.

Lightweight and aerodynamic: easy to tow with almost any vehicle, including electric vehicles.

Quick installation: just one click on the hitch and you're ready to go.

Ideal for camping with a roof tent: leave the trailer at the campsite, without having to close the tent each time you leave, unlike installing it on the roof of the vehicle.

✔ Dynamic load: Maximum weight supported by the roof of the vehicle when it is in motion.

✔ Static load : Maximum weight supported by the roof of the vehicle when it is stationary.

The dynamic load of your roof bars or your vehicle roof are values pre-established by the manufacturers. Refer to your vehicle guide or to your dealer. The static load, on the other hand, is generally more difficult to find.

It is nevertheless essential to clearly differentiate these two values.

✔ Dynamic: The weight of your tent must be less than the dynamic load capacity of your roof bars as well as the capacity of your vehicle roof.

✔ Static: You only take a seat in your roof tent when your vehicle is stationary, so the load to consider in this case is the static load.

When you are in the tent, your weight and that of the other occupants are distributed throughout the structure:

  • The tent itself
  • The structure of the vehicle
  • Roof bars
  • The ladder and the hinges

Typically, the static load supported by a vehicle is about 5 times its dynamic load. So there is generally no issue related to the static load of your bars or the vehicle roof.

Always check your vehicle's specifications in its owner's manual or consult an expert at your dealer if in doubt.

Installing a roof tent

Yes, we have rooftop tent models that are compatible with almost all vehicle models. Before installation, we recommend checking your vehicle specifications to ensure compatibility. For more information on this and the steps to follow, check out our How it Works page!

There are several ways to set up your roof tent:

  • On a WILDTEK outdoor trailer
  • On a rack over a van box
  • Or on crossbars installed on the roof of your vehicle.
  • Some even install them on side-by-side vehicles and boats!

In any case, setup takes about 30 minutes and requires at least two people to safely lift the tent. The tools required are simple and supplied with your tent.

We recommend that you recheck the tightness of the bolts holding the roof tent after the first 50 and 100 kilometers , and occasionally thereafter.

Detailed instructions are included with your rooftop tent and always available in the HOW IT WORKS and INSTALLATION GUIDE section.

If you are unsure, we recommend that you hire professionals for installation. WILDTEK also offers installation service.

WILDTEK tents are compatible with most roof racks. However, we recommend that you choose roof racks that support a dynamic load of at least 185 pounds. If your roof racks support less than 185 pounds, make sure that the capacity is equal to or greater than the weight of the rooftop tent you have chosen. Tent weights are indicated in the product description.

If you want to add an awning next to your roof tent, we recommend you opt for longer crossbars. You must add the weight of the accessories into your load calculation.

Normally, yes, you can install a roof tent with a sunroof or panoramic roof. However, it is important to check your vehicle owner's manual or contact your dealer to be sure. Always check the dynamic load of your vehicle roof. The roof tent will not normally compromise the operation of the sunroof, as it is positioned on higher side bars. However, once the tent is installed, the view from the sunroof will be obstructed.

For the very first setup, it takes about 1 hour to assemble a few final components, such as the ladder and the rails under the tent. Tools and instructions are provided, and it is a simple process that you can do at home. Subsequently, car roof installations usually take between 15 and 30 minutes . This operation must be done with at least one second person to lift the tent and position it on the roof of the vehicle.

Using a roof tent

Yes, it depends on the model. All our tents are equipped with a thick memory foam mattress that stays in the tent even when it is closed. The SEQUOIA and KELOWNA models allow you to leave some accessories, like your pillows and sleeping bags, in the tent once closed. This allows you to save space in your vehicle. Make sure you never force the tent closed. If you do, you have left too many items inside!

Yes, our rooftop tents are designed to withstand strong winds. They are securely attached to your vehicle, which serves as a stable anchor point. The rounded shape of our tents also helps to better withstand gusts. In addition, most of our models are equipped with reinforcement ropes to anchor the tent to the ground in case of very strong winds. Rest assured, our tents have been rigorously tested in extreme conditions and have perfectly resisted.

Yes, our rooftop tents are perfectly designed to withstand the elements. They are made from extremely durable and waterproof poly-cotton materials. In addition, the seams are sealed from the inside to prevent any water infiltration. Thanks to our quality design and manufacturing, you can be sure to stay dry in all circumstances.

Yes, our rooftop tents are designed for 4-season use , including winter in the snow. For optimal comfort in cold weather, we recommend adding a thermal insulation liner to keep you warm. After each winter use, be sure to dry your tent thoroughly to maintain its durability and effectiveness.

Yes, this is completely normal. Although it is easier to control condensation in a roof tent compared to a regular tent, due to its height and large windows, condensation can still form. When you sleep, your breath and body heat generate moisture, which turns into condensation inside the tent. To reduce this condensation, it is important to properly ventilate your tent . Open the built-in vents on the top of the tent or leave 2-4 windows slightly open during the night. This should help to minimize condensation. Remember, ventilation is the key to preventing condensation, no matter the season!

roof tent maintenance and safety

We recommend that you care for your roof tent in the same way as you would a regular polycotton tent. You can clean it with a damp cloth or sponge and water. For stubborn stains, add a little soap to the water. Make sure to rinse and dry the tent thoroughly after cleaning. Once a year, you can apply a re-waterproofing product to the fabrics to keep them watertight. If you notice that the seams are starting to dry out over the years, it is possible to reseal them. These products are available from outdoor sports stores, and although we don't have a specific brand to recommend, make sure you use products that are suitable for the materials of your tent.

Yes, but make sure to reopen it to dry thoroughly within 12 to 24 hours. Never leave a wet rooftop tent closed in its shell for an extended period of time, as moisture could seep into the fabrics and cause mold.

Before storing your roof tent for an extended period, we recommend that you dry it thoroughly to remove any moisture. You can then store your roof tent in a dry and, ideally, temperature-controlled place. Avoid very humid places at all costs. It is best to store your roof tent horizontally (the same way it is installed on your vehicle). It is however possible to store it vertically without any problem.

First, avoid opening your tent under coniferous trees. Although they are very beautiful, these trees can drop sap onto your tent, which is more difficult to clean. If you have sap stains on the canvas, wait until the sap is completely dry before cleaning. You can then place an ice cube under the canvas, at the level of the sap stain, which will make it brittle. You can then gently scrape the sap, which will come off more easily. After that, wash the affected area with soapy water. Rinse well and let dry.

Yes, it is safe. Rooftop tents are built solidly to accommodate the weight of its occupants without any problem. The tent is securely attached to the roof bars, which are themselves attached to your vehicle, which provides a solid anchor to the tent. The ladder is used to support the cantilevered part on some models. It is therefore essential to leave it securely installed at all times when taking a seat in the tent.

Yes, it is safe. Please always ensure that you do not exceed the load limits of your vehicle roof and that your roof bars are compliant and installed correctly. Please also check the tightness of your tent after the first 50 and 100 kilometers , then occasionally check all the tightness of your roof bars as well as your tent thereafter.

No, if it is used correctly. Make sure the tent is always securely fastened and in good working order. Be sure to close the tent properly before setting off. Also make sure your roof bars are compliant and securely fastened.

Adventure Trailers

Probably yes! With its featherweight of only 500 lbs empty, the ROVER trailer is compatible with most vehicles, including many compact cars and electric vehicles .

✔ Always check your owner's manual for your vehicle's towing capacity and make sure you stay within its limits.

Need advice? Contact us, we will be happy to help you!

To use the ROVER trailer with your vehicle you will need:

If you have any doubts, consult your vehicle owner's manual, contact your dealer, or contact us directly!

No, the ROVER does not have independent brakes, because its very light weight does not require an additional braking system.

The ROVER requires very little maintenance thanks to its painted aluminum structure and simple mechanical design. However, here are some recommendations:

✔ Regular inspections: Carry out checks before each long journey to detect any breakages or anomalies.

✔ Lubricate ball bearings: Lubricate the wheel bearings every year or before going on long trips.

✔ Check tire pressure: Check tire pressure regularly, especially before every long trip.

Simple maintenance to ensure your trailer stays ready for adventure!

Yes, the ROVER is designed to withstand the elements and winter cold. Since trailers are considered non-motorized vehicles , it is not mandatory to equip them with winter-approved tires. (Quebec laws)

However, if you are using your ROVER in winter, be especially careful as the risk of skidding is greater on slippery surfaces. Take care to adapt your driving to winter conditions. Refer to the regulations in your Province or State.

Yes, we can help you with the repair and maintenance of your ROVER trailer. We have all replacement parts available and can carry out start or end of season maintenance, or at any other time to suit your needs.

To make an appointment, contact us!

Here are some tips for properly storing your ROVER during the winter season, if you do not plan to use it:

Store it under cover: Ideally, store the trailer in a covered area. If that’s not possible, cover it with a breathable tarp to protect the paint, polymer cover, and other components.

Clean it: Remove any dirt and salt buildup, if any.

Inflate tires and grease bearings: Adjust tire pressure to specifications and grease wheel bearings.

Avoid direct contact of the tires with the ground: If possible, raise the trailer slightly. Otherwise, place boards under the tires to prevent them from deforming.

Protect the electrical connector: Store it in a plastic bag or cover it with a cap to prevent moisture.

Secure the trailer: Don't forget to lock it properly to prevent theft.

Follow these steps to ensure a long life for your ROVER!

The required torque is 90 to 120 ft-lbs (foot-pounds). We strongly recommend that you recheck the tightness of the nuts after the first 100 kilometers after installing or changing your wheels. This will ensure that everything is secure.

The ROVER is 100% manufactured in Quebec. We work with local partners to manufacture the various components. Each ROVER is assembled individually, taking care to validate the quality of each part and each assembly. Unlike some trailers produced in large series, our process is not automated and assembly line, which allows us to guarantee an exceptional and superior quality product every time.
